TEAS English and Language Usage Practice Test

A conjunction serves the critical function of connecting words, phrases, or clauses within a sentence. This connection can enhance the flow of ideas and establish relationships between different parts of a sentence. For example, coordinating conjunctions like "and," "but," and "or" allow for the addition of similar concepts or present contrasting ideas. Subordinating conjunctions, such as "although," "since," and "because," create dependent clauses that rely on independent clauses for meaning. This role is essential in constructing coherent and complex sentences, contributing to the overall clarity and sophistication of writing.

The other options describe different grammatical functions that do not align with the role of a conjunction. Modifying a noun pertains to adjectives and adverbs, expressing strong emotions generally relates to interjections, and summarizing information is associated with certain types of phrases or clauses but not with conjunctions specifically. Thus, the option that identifies the function of connecting elements is accurate and exemplifies the primary role of conjunctions in language.
